Electrogalvanic Stimulation in the Treatment of Levator Syndrome

Abstract
The levator syndrome is a clearly identifiable entity character ized by high rectal pain which can be elicted by pressure applied to the levator ano muscle on digital rectal examination. The levator ani muscle is composed of 3 distiont parts, the
iliococcygeus, the pubococcygeus and the puborectalis. It is spasm of these muscle that account for the symptoms associated with levator syndrome. A variant of the syndrome appears to be proctalgia fugax characterized by fleeting rectal pain that
sometimes will awaken patients in the middle of the night. The levator syndrome is often difficult and intractable to medical and surgical treatment includes massage of the levator complex on digital examination, hot bath, muscle relxants and
anti-inflammatory medication. The use of electrogalvanic stimulation by means of specially desined rectal probe. Author treatet 6 patients this method for 20 minutes every other day. The negative electrode is used and the stimulator is set at 80
cycles
pre second. The machine is adjusted to deliver 100-300 volt, depending upon patient tolerance. Excellent result were obtained in 4 patients. g-ood result in one and no relief in one.
